Thermal spraying applies coatings to upgrade, restore, protect or extend the life of components. It is a generic term for a range of thermal spraying technologies such as:
- Corrosion resistant coatings used to protect surfaces from atmospheric corrosion, chemical attack, alkalis and acids
- Thermal barrier coatings comprised of zirconia oxide used to protect components from temperature, oxidation, and wear
- Dielectric coatings using ceramic to electrically insulate substrates
Traditionally, thermal spraying involved the application of wear and corrosion resistant coatings to materials used in the aerospace, power generation and petrochemical industries. However, now they are being used more routinely for a wide range of manufacturing and service industries and applications.
The vast majority of thermally sprayed components are sprayed manually, but there has been an accelerated use of robotics to lower coating cost, speed deliveries, to apply a more consistent uniform coverage and to reduce the health and safety risks associated with high volume production of parts and assemblies.
